Castle plan or house plan?

I know I know. You will tell me: it is a scandal! Either we restore an old ruined castle, we leave it in ruins, or we make a nice modern house elsewhere. But to make a sort of modern house inside a ruined castle is not possible. It is the same debate for old churches and cathedrals: most have been revamped over the centuries. When restoring them, should they be done in accordance with the initial structure or should they be restored with successive modifications? The question is open, I do not have the answer …

You know, I like the ruins. The ruins sometimes say more about their ancestors than when they were not ruins. And they have a particular aesthetic, especially when playing with light. Sometimes trees invade these ruins, sometimes the sky is visible through the roof. You can even talk about magic.

The feet in water

There are enthusiasts of the ruins, and besides, I am one of them. A few walls on top of a hill, an old castle abandoned in the midst of lush vegetation, a ghost village close to an abandoned mine, and it makes me happy. But you rarely see ruins with feet in the water. No doubt because water very quickly degrades these ruins. No doubt also because it is difficult to access these ruins. But when you have the chance to discover these ruins, what a joy!

What a great idea! A man had the idea to photograph the same buildings for 40 years. This is how a building can be degraded, vegetation invades everything, and the building rises from its ashes. One can see the same kind of evolution at the scale of a city (Post: Cities before and after) but it is even more striking at the scale of a house, because it is on a human scale

Street art is a new urban expression that makes watching his city in a different way. We can see animals hiding under piles of leaves, or see what’s under a simple sidewalk. But little has been exploited the ruins of houses. And yet, with fresh eyes, it can turn a degraded environment in an aesthetic object, like prehistoric people who used each protrusion of the cave to draw and paint animals.
